Bael (Stone Apple) Benefits for Summers

Commonly known as bael, stone apple has a scientific name of aegle marmelos. It is a species of tree native to India. Its fruit is used in traditional medicines and as food as well.

The fruit can be eaten either directly fresh from the tree or after being dried. The juice is strained and sweetened to make a refreshing drink like lemonade. It is widely available during summers as a street food in India. Sometimes people convert it into a sherbet for continued usage for around a week. One made in Orissa have fresh cheese, milk, fruit pulp, sugar, crushed black pepper and ice in it. People drink it to get relieved of the scorching heat of summers. It has a cooling essence.

It has various health benefits including it relieves from constipation, indigestion, ulcer, piles, respiratory problems, diarrhea, and dysentery. It also helps boost immunity and helps fight bacterial and viral infections. It has anti-inflammatory properties. Regular use could prevent cancer and cures diabetes.

It is also called elephant apple for its favorite food of elephants. It’s considered sacred in Hindu religion and cultivated widely across India. It consists of various vital nutrients like vitamins, calcium, phosphorous, fiber, protein and iron.

It’s considered good for digestion as it is rich in fiber and its antibacterial properties kill germs in the intestine. It also cures the ulcers and intestinal infections. It is also recommended as a treatment for chronic dysentery.

You can boil a cup of water and add one tablespoon of dried bael leaves. Cool it for some time and strain it. Drinking this solution three times a day have visual effects on reducing hypertension.

Bael Ka Sherbet (Juice)

Take a medium sized bael, some powdered jaggery, a pinch of black salt and a glass of water.  Break it by striking it with a hammer to explore the inner pulp. Scoop out the pulp into a large bowl and crush it using your palms. Now add water to this pulp and keep squishing the pulp to extract all the juice out of the fruit. Now using a strainer to strain out the pulp. Add jaggery and salt to the mixture and drink it ready to serve.
