It’s true that vagina has some smell, and it’s normal. But if you are experiencing some ‘fishy smell’ then this is not normal. Vaginal odor is usually accompanied by other unpleasant symptoms such as itching, irritation, yellow or white discharge. It can also signal a medical problem and to be more precise, an infection. If you experience a foul-smelling discharge from your vagina, it could mean that there is an overgrowth of yeast and bacteria leading to the vaginal odor. Vaginal odor can be due to the foods we eat, poor sanitation or hormonal imbalance. The growth of bacteria may also occur due to sexually transmitted diseases.
The probable reasons for the occurrence of vaginal odor are:
- Infection by yeast.
- High sugar intake.
- Infection by bacteria (Bacterial vaginosis).
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.
- Sexually Transmitted Disease.
- Poor hygiene.
- Genital herpes.
- Wearing too tight clothes.
- Using scented or harsh soap.
No matter what the reasons, the vaginal odor could be awful and very embarrassing. Many natural home remedies help to treat vaginal odor.
Intake of Yogurt
Including yogurt in your diet helps a lot in combating vaginal odor. The high content of Lactobacillus contributes to maintaining the pH balance of the body. If you dislike the taste of yogurt, you may take a cotton pad and apply it topically on the vagina. Keep it as such for around 15 minutes and then wash it with clean water. Repeat this until you find the fishy smell gone totally.
Including Fenugreek in Diet
Fenugreek is not only used as a spice to improve the flavor in food but also has many medicinal benefits. It is considered as one of the potential remedies for the foul-smelling vagina. Take two tsp of fenugreek seeds and put them in water for a night. As soon you wake up, take the fenugreek soaked water and gulp it instantly after straining the seeds out. Repeat this remedy for about two weeks. A regular intake of fenugreek soaked water has many beneficial effects. It not only regularizes the menstrual cycle but also helps getting rid of vaginal odor.
Garlic is also known as a natural anti-bacterial herb. Having garlic can get you rid of harmful bacteria that causes vaginal odor. Apart from anti-fungal properties garlic also has strong antifungal properties. This eliminates the plethora of fungus causing the yeast infection. It is not advisable to use it topically as it can cause a stinging pain. Eat 1-2 garlic clove with one glass of warm water in the morning on an empty stomach. Or you can include garlic in your dishes like salad and dips. Do it once an everyday day for a week.
Drinking cranberry juice is a traditional remedy for urinary tract infection (UTI). It not only prevents the bacteria to enter the urinary tract but also helps in smooth out fluxes of them. Along with these advantages, it also keeps the vaginal odor at bay.
If your condition keeps on coming back even after you have successfully treated it, try using cranberry juice to get rid of the problem once and for all. Drink one glass of cranberry juice daily for 2-3 weeks.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Some people may find this hard to imagine, but Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is an efficient way to get rid of the fishy smell down there. Many studies have found apple cider vinegar is useful in treating vaginal infections too. Due to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties, ACV can be used to fight vaginal odor. If possible one can take a bath with apple cider vinegar. It makes the vagina toxin free and thus no vaginal odor.
You can mix two cups of ACV in warm bath water. Soak in it for about 20 minutes. Follow this remedy several times a week for a quick result. Or you can also drink a glass of water mixed with one or two tablespoons of ACV daily.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil helps potentially in combating the vaginal odor. It is an excellent anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial herbal remedy. It gets you get rid of germs and bacteria very fast. Make sure that you are not using the undiluted tea tree oil as it may cause allergy leading to irritation and sensitivity.
Mix 4-5 drops of tea tree oil to water in the bathing water. Sit in this water for 20-30 minutes. Later, wash with plain water and pat dry. Do this 2-3 times a day. If you are not comfortable with this, you may mix 2-3 drops of oil in water and wash the vagina.
For even better results add few drops of tea tree oil to some water and soak a tampon in it. Insert the tampon into your vagina and leave for about 5 minutes before taking it out. Do this an hour before you take a bath.
Well-known as the “Ayurvedic wonder,” Indian gooseberry is an excellent source of nutrients. Vitamin C and amino acids found in it can strengthen the body and keep diseases at bay. It’s also a potential remedy for vaginal infection, thanks to its antifungal and antibacterial properties. Just by eating it can get you rid of vaginal odor and other infections.
Add one tsp of gooseberry powder with one and a half tsp of honey. Mix well to make a paste and have this mixture two times a day for at least one month. Or you can mix one tsp of honey with 4-5 tsp of gooseberry juice and have this twice for a month.
Neem or Margosa Leaves
Encompassing great antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties, Neem, also known as Margosa, is one potential solution for vaginal odor. The bark extracts and the leaves both can protect from harmful fungi like Candida. It leads to the yeast infection that in turn gives rise to vaginal odor.
Boil some neem leaves in water. Once it cools down, rinse the vagina with this water. You can also use neem oil for the purpose.
