A suppository is a medicated plug which is inserted into the orifice of your body, for example, the rectum or the vagina. This small medicated mass contains essential oils and herbs which melt when inside the body in the body heat. The active substances are then released into the blood vessels imparting their healing properties and making way to the large intestine to treat conditions like hemorrhoids, constipation, and menstrual cramps.
Also called pessary, the suppositories can be made right at home using the purest and best quality medicinal ingredients. Homemade suppositories are not only economical but are also quite easy to make. More importantly, you have a full control of the ingredients you wish to use to suit your unique needs, whether it is in the treatment of hemorrhoids, constipation or menstrual cramps.
Based on composition, suppositories could be fatty or water-soluble. The fatty suppositories are used for insertion into the rectum. They are composed of high saturated oils. When refrigerated, these oils become a semi-solid and dissolve at body temperature. Palm kernel oil, palm oil, and virgin coconut oil make good suppositories. However, the ideal base for rectal suppositories is cocoa butter as it remains solid at room temperature but dissolves inside the body.
How to Make Suppository Molds
You can make suppository molds in different methods using various ingredients. Aluminum foil is one of the most popular molds for making suppositories. Fold the foil in the form of a torpedo measuring around 5 inches lengthwise and ½ to an inch widthwise. The measurement of the suppositories is largely dependent on who’s going to use it. Usually, the length is 2.5 to 4 inches. If confused, follow the size of the pinky finger. After you have done that, apply a thin layer of fat or base oil in the inner part of the mold. This will facilitate the easier removal of your suppository after congelation.
You can also use a food-grade silicone to make your suppository mold. They can be sourced from an art supply store. Another creative way making suppository molds is using pacifiers or baby bottle nipples. Simply overturn the pacifier or the nipple and pour the suppository mixture into it. Now, just place the filled pacifiers in an ice cube tray. Put it in the refrigerator until it solidifies. Taking out the suppositories is simple too. Just squeeze them out! However, since baby bottle nipples will leak a little, it is best to use ones which have a prolonged flow. But with pacifiers, the leaking problem is well taken care of.
Recipes of Homemade Suppositories
Tea Tree Oil Suppository
Tea tree is a potent antiseptic and has strong antifungal and antimicrobial properties. It is extremely effective in the treatment of hemorrhoids. It is used in diluted form by mixing four drops of it in 2 teaspoons of carrier oil. To make your hemorrhoids suppository, mix 1 to 11/2 tablespoons of cocoa butter with four drops of tea tree oil. Transfer this mixture into the suppository molds. Set them in the refrigerator until firm. However, they should be pliable and not stiff.
Mixed Herb Hemorrhoid Suppository
Microwave a cup of coconut oil for 45 to 60 seconds or in a double boiler until just melted. Add three parts of slippery elm powder and two parts of powdered comfrey, calendula, plantain, and yarrow. Mix enough herbs so that it ends up in a soft clay consistency. Mix in the tea tree oil and roll the mass into little suppositories almost the size of your little finger.
Garlic is an exceptionally good treatment for external hemorrhoids. Press to crush or simply grate three cloves of organic garlic and mix it with a quarter cup of organic coconut oil and ten drops of witch hazel. However, if you are experiencing hemorrhoids that bleed, it is a good idea to keep the garlic to coconut oil ratio to 1:10 for the first couple of days. You can later increase the amount of 1:5 depending on how your body responds to the treatment. To speed up the healing of the tissues further, you can also add few drops of aloe vera gel into the mixture. You can mold this soft mixture into small sausage like suppositories and refrigerate them sealed in plastic containers until ready to use.
Witch Hazel Suppository
Witch hazel is a medicinal herb with anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. It has been used in traditional medicine for shrinking hemorrhoids and giving symptom relief. Steep 5 grams or a teaspoon of the herb for 10 minutes in 240 ml of boiling water. Strain the liquid and set aside. Melt half a cup of cocoa butter and a teaspoon of raw, unbleached beeswax in a water bath and mix in the witch hazel extract. However, take note not to heat the cocoa butter above 95 degrees Fahrenheit as the finished products will crumble or melt at room temperature. Now, fill up your molds at room temperature with this medicinal mixture and set it at room temperature for a good 30 minutes. If they still haven’t congealed within that time, set them in the refrigerator.
Aloe Vera Suppository
The gel of aloe vera plant is a natural laxative and is significantly useful in relieving constipation. It is also greatly effective in easing menstrual cramps and inflammation and discomforts caused by internal hemorrhoids. This suppository also contains the highly saturated coconut oil whose antimicrobial properties speeds up the healing. It also contains the beneficial effects of marjoram essential oil. Combine an ounce or a couple of tablespoons of aloe vera gel, 8 ounces of virgin coconut oil and three drops of diluted marjoram essential oil. Dilute marjoram oil by mixing three drops of it in 2 teaspoons of carrier oil. The fresh coconut butter can be simply melted in a double boiler and used. Fill up your homemade suppositories with these medicated mixtures and place them in an airtight container. Let them set overnight in the refrigerator.
Storing Homemade Suppositories
The suppositories can be stored in the fridge or even in the freezer. Place them in a zip lock bag, labeled, dated and all the ingredients enlisted. The suppositories keep for several weeks in the freezer, wrapped in individual foils.
