Home Remedies for Diabetes
Diabetes, also called diabetes mellitus, is a condition in which the blood sugar levels of the body rises. Diabetes has two primary forms – type 1 and type 2. While in the former type the body cannot synthesize insulin while in the latter, the body cannot cope up with the production of enough insulin or the amount that is produced has practical problems. To date, there are no such cures for diabetes. However, by controlling the blood sugar level, one can live a normal life.
Causes of Diabetes
Prediabetes often leads to type 2 diabetes, and it is caused when the cells begin resisting the action of insulin. The pancreas, on the other hand, is not able to cope up synthesizing enough insulin to overcome this condition. So, the sugar instead of passing into the cells starts building within the bloodstream causing diabetes. Again, the exact causes are still a matter of research, and the genetic and environmental factors are said to trigger the condition. Also, being overweight can increase the risks of developing type 2 diabetes.
While the exact cause of type 1 diabetes is still awaited, it has been found out that the immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells inhabiting the pancreas. It creates a condition within the body that it becomes deficient of insulin, which is responsible for lowering the sugar in the bloodstream. So, as the sugar cannot enter the cells, it starts building up in the blood causing diabetes. Doctors think that the condition can be triggered by genetic as well as environmental factors, although there may be roots of other causes for the condition as well.
Sometimes women may develop diabetes during their pregnancy. It is called gestational diabetes, and it is caused when the placenta releases more hormones which make the cells resist insulin. Usually, in such a case the pancreas are equipped to respond by synthesizing more insulin to overcome the resistance. However, at times the pancreas cannot keep up, and there is too much of glucose in the bloodstream.
Symptoms of Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes more commonly occurs during childhood or adolescence though people of any age can also get this form of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is the more common form. This diabetes too can develop at any age though people more than 40 years old are more prone to the disease. The symptoms of diabetes vary depending on the levels of blood sugar. In the initial stages of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, patients may not even experience the symptoms. However, in type 1 diabetes, patients can realize the symptoms more quickly as they tend to be more severe. Following are some common signs and symptoms of diabetes –
- Increase in frequency of urination
- Feeling thirstier than usual
- Feeling starving
- Unexplained weight loss
- Experiencing blurry vision
- Frequent sores that heal slowly
- Frequent infections of gums, skin or vagina
It is advisable to seek medical attention the sooner you notice any possible signs of diabetes in you or your child. With the condition diagnosed at the right time, treatments can be more efficiently used for a better recovery by stabilizing the blood sugar levels.
