Home Remedies for Congestion in Toddlers

Congestion in Babies is the nightmare. And not that perfect moment to capture in your camera. Still, it’s a milestone of life every baby has to face it. Rather than, heading straight to the drug in a local pharmacy, there are a lot of home remedies which are best to treat your toddler with congestion or any other problem like a tummy ache, gas, stuffy nose, etc.
Home remedies rarely have any side effects and cost nothing. And the big advantage is that you know what’s going inside your baby.

What Causes Congestion?

Common Cold:

This is the most common culprit to cause, congestion. During the cold, mucus forms in throat and nose. It drains its way down to the chest and builds up mucus.

Respiratory Tract Disease:

Respiratory tract disease can also cause congestion. In this case, it’s better to consult a pediatrician.

Low Immunity:

Immunity levels in toddlers are pretty much immature to fight disease.

Symptoms of Congestion in Toddlers:

  • Heavy breathing.
  • Fussy.
  • A severe cough.
  • Unable to eat.
  • Ear pain.
  • Mild fever.
  • Difficulty in sleeping.

So if, next time you come across a minor problem, go for home remedies. Obviously, if the condition is worse do consult a pediatrician. Here I am sharing some of the home remedies for congestion to treat your toddler.

Saltwater/Saline Water Drop:

Kids are too young to blow their nose. Using a bulb syringe and saltwater can clear nose quickly, with no fuzz.

What you need:

  • Three tsp of salt which doesn’t contain iodine in it.
  • One tsp of baking soda.
  • 4cup of water.
  • A rubber Bulb syringe.


  • In a jar add all the ingredients.
  • Tip your child’s head backward.
  • Squeeze 2-3 drops of saline water in each nostril to thin the mucus.
  • After 30 sec, squeeze the bulb of a syringe. Gently inserts the tip of it.
  • And then slowly release the bulb to collect mucus.
  • Wipe the syringe with the help of tissue. Repeat with another nostril.


From infant to adult steaming loosen the mucus and makes it easy to breathe. Well, it’s difficult for a toddler to do take direct steam from a steamer, you can follow these steps.

  • Run your shower with hot water and close the bathroom door, to fill it up with steam.
  • Bring your toddler inside for 20 to 30 minutes and play games with them. As toddlers can be distracted easily.
  • Repeat this for a week.
  • Alternatively, you can run a cool-mist humidifier in the toddler’s room while he/she is sleeping.

Garlic and Carom Seed:

Make a pouch of roasted garlic and carom seed. Due, to garlic’s anti-inflammatory and anti-biotic properties, it helps in relieving congestion.

What you need:

  • One tsp of freshly crushed garlic.
  • Two tsp of carom seeds aka ajwain.
  • Cotton pouch or cotton cloth.


  • Roast both carom seed and garlic for 2-3 minutes.
  • Pour this in a cotton pouch.
  • Rub the pouch on toddlers, chest, and feet.
  • Each time heats the prepared pouch in a pan.


Honey suppress the congestion and soothes the throat.

What you need:

  • ½ tsp honey.


  • Give ½ tsp honey to your toddler before bedtime.

Note: avoid giving honey, to infant below one year old. As it may cause botulism.

Massage Therapy:

Gently massage toddler’s back. It helps to loosen up congestion and makes it easier to release.


Lie your toddler with his/her face down. Massage gently on their back using a lukewarm mustard oil or garlic oil.

Extra Fluids:

Keep your toddler hydrated. It helps in flushing out all the bad bacteria which cause any disease. To keep your toddler hydrated all day long, offer them a smoothie or juice made up, from 100% fruits.  As plain water can be too boring for them.

Warm liquids like vegetable or chicken broth, soup or a chamomile tea is also a great alternative for extra fluid. As warm liquid thin the mucus and can be very soothing.

Raise the Head While Sleeping:

By elevating the head of a toddler while sleeping helps to drain out mucus quickly from the nose. Using towel or pillow under the neck can be helpful in raising the head. Note: Avoid tummy sleeping position, when your toddler is suffering from congestion.

Turmeric Latte:

This home remedy not only sounds fancy but is also very useful in congestion. As Turmeric has anti-bacteria and anti-inflammatory properties, it helps in fighting bacteria and is the commonly used remedy.

What you need:

  • Cup of warm milk.
  • Pinch of turmeric powder.
  • Honey for taste.


  • Boil the milk and add a pinch of turmeric powder in it.
  • Add honey if your toddler doesn’t like the taste.

Lemon Juice:

Lemon is rich in Vitamin C, which is very helpful to boost your immune system.

What you need:

  • A Cup of warm water.
  • One teaspoon of lemon juice.


  • Add one tsp of lemon juice in 1 cup of warm water and give it to your toddler.

Garlic Milk:

Garlic works wonder in any, homer remedy and especially in congestion.

What you need:

  • 1-2 garlic cloves.
  • 1 cup of milk.
  • Pinch of turmeric powder.
  • Honey for taste.


  • Boil 1-2 garlic cloves with 1 cup of, milk.
  • Add a pinch of turmeric powder and honey to it.

Ginger Juice:

Another great ingredient straight, from your kitchen can soothe congestion easily.
What you need:

  • 1tsp of freshly grated ginger.
  • One tsp of honey.


  • Grate fresh ginger, and add honey to it.
  • Offer this in regular interval of time, throughout the day.

How to Prevent Congestion in Toddlers?

Make sure toddler catches enough sleep:

If your toddler is not getting enough sleep, their immune system weakens to fight off dangerous viruses. Ideally,

  • Babies need up to 18-hour sleep.
  • Toddler’s need- 12 to 14-hour sleep.
  • Grade scholar needs- 10 to 11-hour sleep.

Washing Hands Frequently:

Make sure that you toddler’s hands are clean all time. Especially when they eat like 80% of infectious disease spread through hands only.

Keep Your Home Clean:

With toddlers, it’s challenging to keep your home clean. But, make sure to sanitize each and everything from, remote controls to door knobs as we, hardly pay attention to small little things.
Another reason to keep your house clean would be that virus lives for an about 2 hours if they got spread, especially if already one member is sick it can be easy for, other family members to catch the flu.
