Home Remedies to Get Rid of Lice Fast Naturally

Lice are common among children as they play in mud and sand and are not aware of maintaining proper hygiene to avoid such conditions. They can be self-generated or can be transferred from another person who has lice in their head. Lice is a six-legged parasite that lives on the scalp of human beings. They cannot fly or jump, so a direct contact of heads or hairbrush is required to transfer lice from one human being to another. Often this is common among children. They do not cause harm in the long term but having lice in the head is never considered hygienic. It can be a cause of embarrassment in front of others. The sufferer has a natural tendency to scratch his head again and again. There are various home based remedies which are organic and safe to use even by children.

Coconut Oil and Camphor

This is a sure shot remedy for head lice. Mix two tablespoons of hot coconut oil with a crushed tablet of camphor and massage it gently on the roots of your hairs. Now cover your head with a towel or a muslin cloth and sleep with your head covered. In the morning, you will be able to see dead lice in the cloth or towel that you used to wrap your head. Both coconut oil and camphor are harmless to hairs and the human body. Strong smell of camphor leads to the death of lice in your head. This remedy should not be used more than once in a month as strong camphor can otherwise lead to white hairs. One time applies itself if done correctly is so effective that you will get rid of lice permanently. Then in the morning, you can brush your hairs to remove the dead lice from your head. This remedy not only helps get rid of lice but also prevents them from growing further on your head. After you have cleaned your head, wash it thoroughly with a mild shampoo to rinse off excess oil and camphor from your head.



Like camphor, lemon is also known for its high acidic nature. You can easily apply lemon on your head without any side effects, but the lice cannot stand the acidic nature of lemon for long. Cut half a lemon and squeeze it gently while applying it over your head. Then cover your head and leave it overnight. You will be able to see dead lice lying on the towel you used to cover your head. Clean your hairs gently with a thin comb to remove all the affected lice from your head. Wash your head preferably with anti-lice shampoo to have perfect results and voila the head is clean from any lice. If you want, you can repeat this treatment for two three times more to get permanent relief from lice. You can even mix few crushed garlic to have more useful results.



Onion has their pungent smell due to high Sulphur content. This Sulphur is believed to kill the lice in your head as well. Take two three onion based on their size and length of your hairs. Peel off their outer layer and drop them into a blender. Blend them well to a fine paste. Sieve through to extract the juice of onion and gently apply it all over your head.  Leave it for some time and then cover your head with a towel and go to sleep. Similarly, like lemon, Sulphur in onion also kill the lice on your head. Comb you head with lice special combs to remove all dead lice and their eggs from your head. Shampoo you head with a mild shampoo and you are done. Your head is now lice free.

Essential Oils

Essential Oils like tea tree oil and lavender oil can very quickly help us get rid of lice. Due to their harshness and pungent smell the lice are easily removed from the head. Not only do they help get rid of lice from the head but they also help treat the scratches and rashes caused by nails due to natural scratching of the head. They are favorably antiseptic in nature and helps cure any rashes on the head as well. Mix the essential oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil and apply it all over your head. Leave it overnight preferably with head covered and in the morning wash your head with a mild shampoo. After conditioning, your hairs divide them into manageable sections. Now comb these sections with lice special comb to get rid of the dead lice and their eggs from your hairs. You can repeat this process until you are hundred percent free from the lice.

Rubbing Alcohol


Rubbing alcohol is a very powerful disinfectant which can be used to get rid of head lice easily. Pour some rubbing alcohol on your head and massage it gently. Leave it for ten minutes and then wash your head with a mild shampoo and a conditioner. Now comb your hairs to get rid of dead lice and their eggs. You may require repeating the process for few days until your head is immaculate of lice and their trouble. Rubbing alcohol is one of the best home based remedies and can even be applied to keep your head clean even if you are not suffering from any head lice.

Living a hygienic life is often necessary to remain away from problems like head lice. A parent must inculcate such habits into children and needs to make them aware of such conditions so that they avoid exchanging gestures with other people who are suffering from head lice. Once you have acquired the head lice, you need to be patient to get rid of them entirely and take proper steps to ensure that you do not pass it on to other peer members. Never share the same bed, comb or towel off the person suffering from the head lice until its treated thoroughly for these habits might cause head lice transfer to others as well.
