Effective Home Remedies to Get Rid of Persistent Dry Cough

Warm Milk with Turmeric

Boil a glass of milk with half a teaspoon of turmeric. Drink this lukewarm milk slowly twice a day. You can also add crushed garlic to the boiling milk to get more relief. Adding ginger instead of garlic works well equally. This drink will definitely sooth your irritating throat. At the same time gargle with warm water added turmeric to it twice or thrice a day. The active agent curcumin in turmeric has a strong anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that work quite well for a dry cough. Ginger and garlic provide relief in tonsils. Warm milk brings up the mucus from the chest. Drink this mixture before sleeping to give comfort to your overworking throat.

Giloy Juice and Warm Water

Take two tablespoons of Giloy juice with warm water in the morning to get relief from chronic dry cough. Giloy juice improves your immunity to a great extent. If your cough is allergic then taking giloy extract with warm water can soothe your throat. Giloy juice acts as an anti-allergic and is quite useful if you have an allergic driven a dry cough.

Honey, Licorice, and Cinnamon

Taking water teas spoon of honey, licorice and cinnamon twice a day with warm water can do wonders for your persistent cough. Honey has the potent anti-inflammatory properties that make it more preferable than most of the over the counter medicines. The cough suppressants like dextromethorphan that are present in honey make it quite a favorite for dry cough treatment. Due to its sweet taste, even children like to have it without any trouble.

Black Pepper and Ghee

Black pepper is also referred as a black gold for its unusual properties. Have a teaspoon of black pepper with ghee after meals to soothe your inflammable throat. You can even have black pepper with honey if you are not comfortable with ghee. Especially children can have honey with black pepper.

Pomegranate Juice


Pomegranate juice, if given with ginger and pippali powder, can provide relief from a dry cough to a large extent. It is a brilliant concoction for children. Due to the presence of Vitamin A and C, pomegranate juice boosts the immunity in children. Ginger powder has a heating effect on the throat and pippali is an excellent Ayurveda herb with numerous benefits. Ginger can be replaced with black pepper also.

 Tea with Spices

Prepare a hot cup f steaming tea along with few spices like fresh ginger, black pepper, tulsi leaves and cinnamon. Sip this spiced tea for quick relief from a dry cough. You can have this tea twice or thrice a day. You can also add clove and cardamom which also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to soothe your throat. If you are suffering from a productive cough then also this spiced tea will help you loosen the phlegm from the lungs. It is also a great help in drying the running noise.

 When to Look for Medical Supervision

All the above home remedies are bound to give you not so irritant throat. But if your problem persists for more than seven days or you experience any of the following symptoms then do seek medical advice.

  1. There is suspicion of some other medical issues.
  2. You see blood in your cough.
  3. You have a high fever.
  4. You feel much tired and lethargic.
  5. There is an unexplained loss of weight.

See your doctor if you have more than one symptoms mentioned above. As a dry cough for more than three weeks can result in Asthma, in which your airways become inflamed and partially blocked, and you have trouble while breathing. It may also be a sign of heart-related diseases. When fluid builds up in your lungs, you may have severe cough attacks, especially during nights.
