Athlete’s Foot – Home Remedies, Causes, and Symptoms
Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection affecting the skin on the feet. It is contagious and could spread to toenails and sometimes even the hands. This infection is termed athlete’s foot as it is commonly seen in athletes.
Causes of Athlete’s foot
The infection occurs when Tinea fungus starts growing on your feet. The fungus gets infested via direct contact with an already infected person or rather by touching the surfaces that are contaminated with the Tinea fungus. This fungus thrives in moist and warm environments and is found commonly in showers, around swimming pools and locker room floors.
Symptoms of Athlete’s foot:
- Stinging, itching and burning experienced on the soles (feet)
- blisters on the itching feet
- peeling and cracking peeling skin on the feet
- dry skin on the sides or soles of the feet
- thick, discolored, and crumbly toenails
- toenails which pull away from nail beds
Home remedies to treat Athlete’s foot
- Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil exhibits properties that destroy the fungus and prevent it from spreading to other areas. Add some organic tea tree oil to the foot bath and soak them for ten minutes. After drying your feet, use a few drops of tea tree oil to massage the affected area.
- Baking soda
Take a little organic corn starch or baking soda and sprinkle on your toes before wearing your socks. The baking soda/corn starch helps soak up moisture. While it doesn’t work to stop the itch, it helps absorb sweat, thereby preventing the sweaty foot smell.
- Coconut oil and sesame oil
Sesame oil and virgin coconut oil possess anti-fungal properties. These can be directly applied to the feet. Swab these oils liberally on clean and dry feet using a cotton ball two times a day for best results.
- Neem oil
Neem oil is another natural oil which is toxic to some organisms. Apply pure neem oil to clean dry feet using a cotton ball every day.
Ginger happens to be a potential anti-fungal. Take a little chopped ginger and add it to a glass of boiling water. Simmer it for 20 minutes. Once it gets cooled, apply it to clean feet twice every day. You can get relief from itching and the infection; moreover, the feet will enjoy a good spicy smell!
Salt is an effective home remedy to treat athlete’s foot. All you have to do is take some lukewarm water in a large tub and add three tablespoons of salt. Then, soak your feet in the tub for ten minutes. Dry the feet thoroughly and dab some baking soda. Repeat this process two times every day until you notice a considerable improvement in symptoms. If there are wounds or open sores, don’t use this remedy.
With excellent antibiotic, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties, onion are an effective cure for athlete’s foot. Apply a little onion juice on the affected area and leave it for 60 minutes. Wash off with warm water and pat dry. You can use talcum powder so as to keep the area free from moisture. Repeat this remedy two times a day to see good results quickly.
